Engage, Encourage, Engage

Engage and encourage your photography clients to gain the best expressions, a blog post from Oregon Senior Photographer, Holli True

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: ENGAGE, ENCOURAGE, ENGAGE

The best photography tip for capturing authentic expressions and images full of life, is engagement and encouragement! It’s all about genuine interaction and providing positive feedback to your client. There is nothing more awkward than silence and during a shoot, you definitely want to avoid anything involving the word awkward. Instantly put your clients at ease by engaging them in casual conversation, right from the start. Creating that genuine connection with them will allow them to look past your camera and straight through to you.

When my client arrives, I focus 100% of my attention on her. I compliment how beautiful she is and share with her how genuinely excited I am to work with her. The conversation continues as we walk to the first location. I already know she is nervous, so I don’t talk about the shoot at all. I ask questions that piggyback info she’s provided from our Senior Questionnaire. Hobbies, activities, sports, academics, summer plans, travel, interests, etc.

I keep the conversation flowing the entire time, even as I start to setup the shot. I do this on purpose to keep her engaged and not thinking about her nerves. The more she stays out of her head and the more she is actively involved in what we are talking about, the better. While posing, I mix conversation with directions, when needed. When I start shooting, I move right into giving encouraging praise for how great she is doing, keeping her in the moment and not thinking about her nerves. Between shots, it’s right back to conversation. This is the natural flow of how I work with my clients, which works beautifully!

WHAT PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT BODY LANGUAGE

“I recently purchased the Body Language PDF and video, watched it and took the tips to apply on my latest senior session. It blew me away that I was able to get more, but shoot less, and make my senior look more effortless and natural than before. I was SO excited when culling through their session and seeing how many beautiful portraits I got from 3-4 poses. If you’re looking for a way to learn more about guiding, posing, and getting the best results ever you should definitely purchase this guide!”

“Let me first say that Holli True is one of my favorite senior photographers!! I learned so much from her at a Click Away conference last year. I recently got Body Language and I love it!! She shows you exactly how she poses and how she keeps the senior poses natural. I love being able to see it on video instead of reading it and hoping I do it right! Thanks so much Holli! This is a really great product that has helped me a ton with my senior model shoots and sessions! I would recommend this to any photographer who wants to easily direct their seniors into beautiful, natural poses.”
