Five years. I waited five years to finally see two of my favorite musicians perform live, Angus & Julia Stone. And let me tell you, it was so worth the wait! It was back in 2009 that I first heard this brother and sister duo- I was in search of a wedding song to use for a slideshow I was working on and I came across a song sung by them entitled, “The Wedding Song”. No joke. From the moment I heard the harmonica, I was sucked in- and then Julia’s breathy voice sealed the deal- I became an immediate fan. And I mean hardcore, head-over-heals, infatuated.
Music plays a major part in my life. It always has. Whether it was while I was sketching, sculpting or painting during my high school days or while creating complex stories with fictional characters, music has been a constant companion to me when it comes to creativity. And I can safely say that I can’t write without it. Music is my poetry, good lyrics tend to take up residence in the caverns of my mind and inspire scenes in the novels I wrote.
I have mad respect for musicians- their artistry is something that truly blows my mind and moves me in ways I can’t even begin to express in words. While I love most forms of music, singer/songwriters who play instruments- especially guitars and harmonicas- tend to own my heart. So you can imagine my love for Angus & Julia. What can I say? I’m a smitten kitten.
“THE WEDDING SONG” (live version):
This past Saturday was a dream come true for me. Not only was I able to FINALLY see Angus & Julia live, I had a front row seat to view it. No joke friends, I was close enough to reach out and practically touch them! It’s rare to find musicians that actually sound better live than when they are recorded in-studio, but this was the case with them. They sing with such raw passion and undeniable soul, it’s a beautiful thing to witness in-person. And the way they harmonize with one another is simply beautiful. Hands-down, one of the best concerts experiences of my life. No question.
“HEART BEATS SLOW” (live acoustic):
If you aren’t already a familiar with their incredible music, hopefully my little Ode to Angus & Julia Stone will make you a new fan. And if not… well, I guess I’m content with knowing that I love them enough for those who don’t. Though, how could you not? ;) To Angus & Julia, even though I know your eyes will probably never, ever see this post, I still had to express my thanks to you for creating music that inspires me create, too. You will always have an undying fan in Oregon. Until next time… XO.
