Over the past few months, I’ve been hinting about some big changes in my business. A major undertaking was redefining the senior portrait experience for my clients. To be completely honest, I was in a creative rut. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to shake it. On the outside, things looked great. I was busy and my business was running like a well-oiled machine. But that was exactly the problem and it became my internal struggle. I had become a machine, pumping out the same thing, over and over again. Although my time and connection with each senior client was special and unique, the locations, poses and techniques were all the same. As I took on more session, the less I pushed myself creatively.
Somehow, Young & Free had taken on the feeling of Routine & Limited. Yeah, that was a painful reality check. While I was in the thick of my busy season this past summer, I knew I needed to make some serious changes to my shooting process. If you’re a photographer, you know this is the worst time possible to implement new things. I was already crazy with bookings, how in the world was I going to revamp my process? On top of that, they had booked me based on my previous work and style, which meant I couldn’t go full-force with a new style. Yet.
Redefining the senior portrait experience for my clients was a slow and gradual transformation. And I loved the process. It allowed me to experiment a little at a time without making a full commitment right out of the gate. It also helped me see that there were elements of my old style that I still loved. I didn’t have to say goodbye to all of my familiar ways. Instead, I was able to implement new techniques and marry them with my tried and true methods.
The biggest changes have been applied to my session structure. I did away with limitations and waved hello to endless possibilities. I’m saying yes to adventure. Yes to exploring. Yes to creating something unique and beautiful and one-of-a-kind. Yes to fueling my creative heart. Less posing. More movement. Less perfection. More real. 2018 is going to be my year of growth. My year of change. My year. I can’t wait to see what unfolds.
